How to Clean a Dryer Vent
Excessive lint building occurs gradually and slowly. It is really important to clean dangerous lint build up in your dryer and dryer venting; as a 1999, the USCPC (U.S. consumer product safety commission) developed a report that more than 15,000 dryer fires started in one year.
If you can’t remember the last time you cleaned your vents, it’s likely time you hire a professional service for dryer vent cleaning, because delaying the cleaning can cause bacteria and even infection into the air you breathe. The excessive lint can increase the risk of dangerous fires in the house further aggravating the problem.
If you haven’t yet cleaned up your dryer vent, then get it done from a professional vent cleaner or follow the steps below to do it on your own.
How to Clean Your Dryer’s Vent
Pre-Requisites – You will need the following items to carry out the cleaning process:
- Warm Soapy Water
- Duct Tape
- Towel(You can use an old one)
- Gloves
- Screwdriver
- A brush like toilet brush (You can use clean toilet brush instead)
- A long piece of wood (A broom hand preferably)
What You Need To Do:
- Whether you have a gas dryer or an electric one, what you need to do is simply TURN IT OFF. (NEVER try cleaning a dryer vent with power ON)
- Take the dryer out of the wall (usually 1 1⁄2 to 2 feet).
- Use a screwdriver to unscrew/loosen the vent clamp and slide it off the dryer.
- Clean with a toilet brush and remove any excess lint, don’t forget the ends though! (using pointed objects is not recommended)
- Tie an old towel to the broomstick and use a duct tape to wrap them up. This will clean the vent even better (use gloves to clean up the louver covering of the outside dryer vent with warm soapy water).
- If you missed any of it, use of vacuum cleaner is advised.
- When you are done with the cleaning, put everything back in place.
- Turn power ON, run it on air fluff for about 10 minutes, check for any obstructions and you are good to go!
